Genocide Prevention
“The fact that thousands signed on to our pledge campaign shows that the will exists, not only to address ongoing crises like those in Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Eastern Burma, but also to ensure that such crises never emerge in the first place.”
- Sam Bell, Executive Director, Genocide Intervention Network
Genocide Intervention Network is pushing Congress and the Administration to implement the Genocide Prevention Task Force (GPTF) report’s most important recommendations, including requiring the Administration to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent genocide, instituting a mechanism for reporting on the status of escalating conflicts, and authorizing funding for genocide-prevention activities.
The GPTF released its final report, Preventing Genocide: A Blueprint for U.S. Policymakers, on December 8, 2008, making the case for why genocide and mass atrocities threaten core American values and national interests, and how the U.S. government can prevent these crimes in the future. The Task Force, co-chaired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former Secretary of Defense William Cohen, was convened by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the U.S. Institute for Peace and the American Academy of Diplomacy.
GPTF Policy Recommendations
It’s up to us to ensure that genocide prevention is a national priority. Only strong leadership and vigorous political will can transform these recommendations into reality. As anti-genocide advocates you can play a critical part in the process by holding our elected officials accountable for their action to implement these recommendations.
- Increase flexible funding for crisis prevention and response;
- Build a reliable process for assessing risks and triggering warnings for immediate action;
- Create an Atrocities Prevention Committee to halt and reverse escalation towards mass atrocities; and
- Strengthen norms and institutions through diplomacy to create an international genocide-prevention network.
